Ash Wednesday

Today's readings - Joel 2:1-2, 12-17; 2 Corinthians 5:20b"6:10; Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21

Joel 2:12-13
12 12 Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; 13 rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing.

Have you ever had a close call, near miss, or just found yourself saying "Wow, that could have been so much worse"? What Joel describes in chapter 2 is SO MUCH WORSE. Much of the horror is described in verses omitted from today's passage but it includes fire, warhorses, armies, battles, earthquakes, darkness. It's BAD.
But, there is STILL HOPE!

Even now, with pending disaster at our heels, we can turn to the Lord. What will it look like? Change from the inside out. Not external for all to see, but in our hearts where the Father sees.

Heavenly Father, move us to turn to you and change us from the inside out. Amen.
