March 2
Romans 1:1-7

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God----the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him and for his name’s sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. And, you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

The letter to the Romans is a message to the people of a church established earlier by Paul and his colleagues. This section appears to be a quick introduction at the beginning of the letter to remind the receivers of who Paul was, and what he defines as basic beliefs, followed by a salutation to begin the letter.

Paul identifies himself and his role, then talks about the familial roots in David and the Spirit, (which correspond with prophecies in the Old Testament) and the Resurrection of Jesus.

Through him and for his name’s sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. And, you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

Then he reminds the group they are now a part of the people receiving grace (forgiveness and acceptance) and Paul mentions faith and obedience (reminding of the Law and need for devotion to beliefs,) and the expansion of the Way to those outside the confines of the ancient Jewish community. With the joy of belonging comes responsibility for spreading the Word and living the life.

To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Finally, the salutation of the letter---Dear friends---and the joyful greeting of Christians then and now.

Thank you, dear Lord, for giving us Paul as a messenger and example of what we should do and how we should act; for accepting us and encouraging responsible and obedient actions in your name; for the joy of grace and living with you in our hearts and actions. Amen
