Isaiah 51:1-3 & 2 Timothy 1:3-7

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. (2 Timothy 1:2)

3 I am grateful to God"whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did"when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. 6 For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; 7 for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.

Gratitude. Encouragement. Challenge.

Here’s Paul, in prison, writing to his dear friend, Timothy. Times are tough, but he is expressing gratitude and encouraging Timothy to keep the faith. Like a parent writing to a child, Paul reminds Timothy that he is grateful to God when he remembers Timothy in prayer and he challenges him to keep the faith that has been passed down to him through the generations. Paul reminds him that God gave him the gift of love and self-discipline. “You can and must do it, Timothy!”

Paul’s letter to Timothy is moving and timeless. It’s 2017 and Paul’s letter, written thousands of years ago, is applicable today. Like Paul, let’s be optimistic and live each day being grateful to God.

I am grateful I was born into a family that was passing on the faith from generation to generation. I’m grateful that my parents took me to church and Sunday School. I’m grateful that they read to me from Bible-story books. I’m grateful that we always said a prayer at meal time, even if we had guests. (Grateful, now, anyway, even if those guests happened to be my Saturday night date!) I’m grateful that my mom and my dad both gave of their time at church and in the community. I’m grateful that they showed me how to show appreciation for others. I’m grateful that my Dad made his way to my bedside each night to pray with me and my siblings. (He was a farmer and I’m sure many, many nights he came in from the field exhausted and it would have been easier for him to just go to bed, but he’d make his way up the stairs for bedtime prayers EVERY night.)

I am grateful for my husband and our children. I am grateful to God when I remember them in prayer. Thank you, God, for your gift of Grace and for the opportunity to pass along the faith to another generation.

Like Paul, I am grateful for people in my life that are like family to me. We are grateful for each other. We encourage each other and we challenge each other to use God’s gifts.

The torch is being passed. As we give thanks to God, let’s remember to keep the flame burning.

Let it shine. Let it shine. Let it shine.
