Romans 3:21-31

March 10, 2017
Romans 3:21-31
Paul says that a person is justified, or made righteous, or saved and made acceptable to God by faith and not by works, not by things that we do. But elsewhere in the Bible, James says that faith without works is dead (James 2:14-17).
An explanation for this difference is that Paul and James understand "faith" differently. For Paul, "faith" means trust in God and a committed relationship with God. Such faith can lead us to feel loved by God and empowered to do good things, both for ourselves and for others.
James understands having "faith" as intellectually accepting Christian doctrine. That view of faith didn't automatically motivate people to do good, so James had to call for "works" to be done.
Dear God, keep me in touch with Your spirit, so that I may continue to be motivated to find ways to be helpful to the world, both near and far. Amen.
