Genesis 12: 1-4a

March 12
Genesis 12: 1-4a
The Call of Abram
12Now the LORD said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’
4 So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
This concept of being blessed to be a blessing is something that I think of often in my own life and when I am teaching youth about being free to serve others . We have been blessed with the Grace of God and in turn we are called to respond to that blessing by extending the blessing of Grace and forgiveness to others. But what does this look like? How do we live this out in daily life? These are the questions that we often ask in Confirmation, reminiscent of what Luther asks in the Small Catechism- “What does this mean?”
So, what does this mean? For me, it means that all that I have been given is meant to be used in service to others. I have been blessed with the gift of enthusiasm, and therefore I am free to offer that enthusiasm in encouraging others. I have been blessed with the gift of family, so I should do what I can to be a blessing in their lives through acts of love and service. We do not have all that we have because we have done well for ourselves and God is rewarding us. Instead, I believe that those blessings are given so that we can share them with our brothers and sisters in Christ. So that God can work in us, using these gifts, to love God’s children. It is a blessing to be called and used by God to do God’s work in the world, and I am blessed!
Oh Lord, I thank you for the many blessings that you give me from your generosity and abundance. Help me to remember that these gifts are meant to be used in service to others, not locked up tight in the secret places of my soul. You have blessed your children to be a blessing to the world around us. Give us the courage to do this, in your holy name. Amen.
