Numbers 21:4-9

Numbers 21:4-9
“The grass is always greener on the other side.” We have all heard it before, and will likely hear it again and again. This concept is was alive and well long before our modern context. In the Numbers passage for today, we see the Israelites grumbling, wishing they were back in Egypt. “Why have you brought us out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?” is there key question to Moses. The grass looked greener on the other side. It is as though they thought that being freed from Egypt meant everything would suddenly be perfect.
What they found: there are struggles wherever you are. There is no utopia, some mystical place void of trials and tribulations. Instead of finding some perfect place, we have a God who continues to go with us. No matter what the situation brings, whether you thought it would be greener or not, we have a God who is present in the midst of it. And suddenly the place we are at can become “greener” as we see the blessing of the presence of God.
Almighty God, you come to us and call us your own. Help us to know that you are always present and go with us amidst the changes in life and circumstances. Thank you for always being there. Amen.
