Isaiah 65:17-25

Isaiah 65:17-25

When a scripture lesson speaks of the New Jerusalem, our thoughts naturally turn to the New Testament and the book of Revelation. But John of Patmos does not have a corner on visions of the appearance of the new Holy City. The prophet Isaiah, writing to a people in turmoil, displaced by force to a foreign country, and far away from their ancestral home described a New Jerusalem. In this city the inhabitants will experience conditions similar to what is sought today in the cities of the world. Isaiah says there will be no infant mortality. Old people will enjoy all their days. Laborers will find joy in their work; farmers will enjoy the produce from their lands, orchards, and vineyards; and parents will see their children grow into successful adults.

Similar to John offering hope to the discouraged and distrusting, Isaiah described a vision where the inhabitants of Jerusalem would find a purpose for their lives.

Kind and generous God, in these days of uncertainty, schisms, upheaval, and confusion, instill in us your vision of hope so that we can work toward a future that embraces your kingdom.
