Exodus 16:9-12

Exodus 16:9-12
9 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the Israelites, ‘Draw near to the Lord, for he has heard your complaining.’” 10 And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the Israelites, they looked toward the wilderness, and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. 11 The Lord spoke to Moses and said, 12 “I have heard the complaining of the Israelites; say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”

As my mother can attest, I would complain a lot growing up. Mostly about my brother. Maybe you can relate. But this is different.

This isn’t the petty complaining like, “I had to wait to watch PG-13 movies until I was 13, but my brother got to watch them at age 11”. This is more “Hey, God! Yeah, so I’ve been a slave in Egypt and that really sucked. Now you send this Moses guy to deliver us and we’re wandering around the desert with nothing to eat or drink” type of complaining.

But God’s listening and says, when you eat meat at night and bread in the morning, you will know I am God.

That’s promising.

Don’t be afraid to complain to God. Lent is a time to dwell in the darkness of Christ’s death. It’s a time to lament, cry out, and complain to God about injustice and wrongdoing in the world.

Complain. God is Listening.

God of light, be with us in the darkness of our world. Let our prayers and complaints rise up like incense before you. Aid those in our world who are marginalized and looked down upon and help us be agents of change. Amen
