Daily Devotion For Saturday March 18, 2017

Exodus 16:27-35 John 4:1-6

Exodus 16:27-35
John 4:1-6

It's a commandment! Remember the Sabbath day, to keep holy! Six days shall you labor. The Sabbath is a day of rest.

Each day manna, a food 'like white coriander seed and taste like wafers made with honey', was available to the people, but on the sixth day, the order was to gather enough for the day, and for the Sabbath as well.

"Never the less the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, and found none. How long will you refuse to keep my commandments, and my instructions?"

Our familiar prayer petition, 'Give us this day, our daily bread' reminds us, of God's providing!

Luther had a list of what God provides.
What then does "daily bread" mean?
Everything included in the necessities and nourishment for our bodies, such as food, drink. clothing, shoes house, farm, fields, livestock, money, property, and upright spouse, upright children, upright members of the household, upright and faithful rulers, good government, good weather, peace health, decency, honor, good friends, faith neighbors and the like. Luther says we ask in this prayer that cause us to recognize what our daily bread is and to receive it with thanksgiving. A daily prayer, for daily bread. Our Lenten discipline.

Hymn #484 v. 4
The myst'ry of your presence, Lord, nor mortal tongue can tell:
whom all the world cannot contain come in our hearts to dwell.

You satisfy the hungry heart with the gift of finest wheat.
Come give to us, O saving Lord, the bread of life to eat.
