I Samuel 15:22-31 Ephesians 5:1-9

I Samuel 15:22-31
Ephesians 5:1-9

The Sentence on Saul was coming down.
Saul makes his plea to Samuel, (the king maker, prophet of the Lord)
Samuel lays it on, he does, "I will not go back with you. You have rejected the word of the Lord and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel."
This is not - win some, -lose some - this is about the life work of Saul. He was anointed the first king of Israel. Now he is done. Not immediately, as chapters 16-31 attest. He grabs Samuel's robe. Samuel says "The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today."
This happens. Is there empathy for Saul. You remember God's servant, Job. He lost his herds of livestock. He lost his family in death, he mourns, his friends ask, "What terrible thing have you done to cause this misery?" For Job, to readers, there is sympathy. For Saul, not so much.
Each person, Saul, the King, and Job, God's servant, is only human. Each struggles with faith. God is with them in their struggle.

O Lord, we sense your presence in joyful times. May we sense your care, and support in a time of distress. Come, Lord Jesus, with your affection for your servants, in Jesus name, who lives and reigns with you, heavenly Father, now and forever. Amen
