Colossians 1:9-14

March 28, 2017 â€" Colossians 1:9-14

What does one say to a friend when that person seeks or requires encouragement? Paul and Timothy faced this challenge when they wrote their letter to the believers in Colossae. The early verses of the book of Colossians do not describe the challenges facing the early church within ancient Phrygia (a district of Asian Minor in currently Turkey). However, there is clarity in the content of Paul’s message. Paul begins by letting the people know that he is praying for them (verse 9). He continues to be specific about the intent of his prayers. He prays for them to be filled with knowledge and understanding; he asks for them to lead a worthy life; and asks that they endure with patience and joy (verses 9-11). What Paul does not offer is specific recommendations or admonishments to the Colossians. It appears that he wants them to find their own solutions within the teachings they have acquired through prayer and study. In the end, Paul trusts that prayer to God will provide the believers with an answer to their dilemmas.

Loving God: Respond to our prayers with guidance from you; help us determine the pathway that follows your will and leads to a life worthy of your mission.
