Ezekiel 33:10-16 Revelation 11:15-19

Ezekiel 33:10-16
Revelation 11:15-19

From Ezekiel 33
10 Now you, mortal, say to the house of Israel, Thus you have said: “Our transgressions and our sins weigh upon us, and we waste away because of them; how then can we live?” 11 Say to them, As I live, says the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from their ways and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways; for why will you die, O house of Israel?

It seems for all of time, God's people have been in the position of carrying a heavy weight of transgression. Prophet after prophet reminded them of God's covenant and the need to turn from their evil ways. Even in the New Testament we hear Paul confess...I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do (Romans 7:19). And still today we practice confession and absolution as part of our worship together. We predictably fail on our own as God's people. But God steadfastly calls us his children and grants us forgiveness. The best news we hear all week!

From our hymnal---
God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Amen.
