1 Kings 17:17-24 Acts 20:7-12

April 3

1 Kings 17:17-24
Acts 20:7-12

There are many times that I wish the essence of these texts would appear in our midst. Whether Elijah raising the widow’s son, or Paul bring the life back into Eutychus, it is easy to imagine how things would be different if something like that happened when a loved one died. If only someone could hold them, hug them, pray over them, and they came back to life. We too would be “not a little comforted.” There would be a second chance to share stories, create stories, and to do all of the things that you regret had never happened before they died.

Most of the time, we are not given those second chances or opportunities to create stories together. Instead, these texts serve as a reminder that death does not own the future. God is in control of the future, and that future includes life through Christ. Maybe that should be our focus. Instead of grieving the profound realities of death, we could focus on today. Who should we speak to today? How can we create and share stories today? How can we have life in Christ, and have it abundantly?

Today has great potential, because God is already here. Greet God and greet life.

Almighty God, you come to us even in the midst of death and grief and remind us of you love. Give us not only strength for today, but bright hope for tomorrow and every day you give us. Amen.
