“No Greater Gift”

Tuesday, April 4, 2017 " “No Greater Gift”

2 Kings 4:31-35 “ 32 When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch. 33 He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed to the LORD. 34 Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm. 35 Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.”

Ephesians 2: 4-5, 8-10 “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions"it is by grace you have been saved.... 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith"and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God" 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Reading the passage from 2 Kings I couldn’t help but ponder two things " the depth of love of the mother for her son and the great mercy shown by Elisha. Her child had died. She couldn’t tell her husband. She sought out Elisha and would not leave his side until he answered her plea " “Save my son”. Elisha, in his great mercy, followed the woman to where her son lay. Elisha did not just speak words over this child but physically imparted life on him. Knowing Hebrew laws of that time, it would be a sin to be in the room with a dead body, let alone touch it. Sacrifice and separation from others would be required.

Fast forward to the New Testament. In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he so eloquently, and yet simply, explains what God has done for us. In His great mercy, he has made us alive again. We were dead in our transgressions. He physically came to us in the person of Jesus to save us. Nothing we can do can save us, Jesus paid the price in his death on the cross.

The woman bowed down before Elisha. How do we respond? With good works. We were created by God, in Christ Jesus, for this purpose.

Dear Merciful God, Thank you that your grace and mercy has made us alive again through Jesus Christ. Help as we help others, as you created us to do. Amen
