Isaiah 42:1-9 Hebrews 9:11-15

Isaiah 42:1-9
Hebrews 9:11-15

ā€œA bruised reed he will not break.ā€ I was reading something by Henri Nouwen and he spoke about reeds not breaking. This contrasted with the mighty trees that can break in the wind. We know this well living in the Midwest. Sometimes the wind will snap a tree in two, or simply knock it down, meanwhile the reed, or other smaller plants whip to and fro, but the day after the storm they begin to stand up, proud, once again. The reason is not due to strength. The trees are definitely stronger. The difference is in the ability to adapt and flow with your surroundings.

The tree stands tall, but once fully grown it is harder to weather the storm. It becomes rigid and unable to move, and it the wind moves just right: Crack! Meanwhile, the reeds and bushes and other plants can swing to and fro with the wind, having the flexibility to weather the storm while remained firmly rooted.

This week, we journey together to the cross, and as we do, it is good to remember to be flexible and rooted. When we become too rigid to see what God might be up to, we can easily be like those who simply want to preserve what they have known. And if we sway to and fro and are not rooted in Christ, we become like the crowd yelling ā€œCrucify Him!ā€ without really knowing what that means for us.

Almighty God, you journey with us toward the cross this week. Keep us rooted in you and your love. Keep us flexible to see you at work in your world, even if it is in ways we do not understand. Amen.
