1 Corinthians 1: 18-31

April 11

1 Corinthians 1: 18-31
“The Message that points to Christ on the Cross seems like sheer silliness to those hellbent on destruction, but for those on the way of salvation it makes perfect sense.”

These are the opening words of Paul’s proverbial teaching on the wisdom of God as quoted from the Message Bible Translation. Wikipedia characterizes the Message translation as “using contemporary slang from the U.S. rather than a more neutral International English, and it falls on the extreme dynamic [energetic] end of the dynamic [energetic] and formal equivalence spectrum.”

“This is the way God works, and most powerfully as it turns out. It’s written, I’ll turn conventional wisdom on its head, I’ll expose so-called experts as crackpots. So where can you find someone truly wise, truly educated, truly intelligent in this day and age? Hasn’t God exposed it all as pretentious nonsense? Since the world in all its fancy wisdom never had a clue when it came to knowing God, God in his wisdom took delight in using what the world considered dumb"preaching, of all things!"to bring those who trust him into the way of salvation.”

Jesus was crucified and died on a cross because of his preaching, of all things! He preached Love and inclusion for all people. That fell on the extreme energetic end of the energetic and formal equivalence spectrum to be sure, especially to those who were hellbent on maintaining their positions of power and authority. Preaching Love as the most powerful energetic force in the Universe seems to be something they considered “dumb” and, even destructive to their order.

It seems to make no sense at all in today’s world either. Power and authority have always been considered the energetic forces that establish kingdoms.

And, yet, those who truly follow Jesus on his journey have found it to be their only way to salvation. Love is the energetic force that propels a person along the journey of suffering, dying to self and finally into new life in God’s Kingdom, which Jesus taught is peace and equanimity in the here and now.

Loving God, thank you for Jesus who came to preach Love and inclusion for all people. As we follow Jesus on our journey propelled by the energy of Love, may we rise to new life in your Kingdom through preaching Love and inclusion for all in our world. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
